I tested 5 Chinese tone apps. One actually fixed my pronunciation.

My friend from the US has been learning Chinese for 8 months. She can read 200 characters. She can hold a basic conversation.

But her tones are a disaster.

She once tried to say "I want to buy a pen" (我想买笔 — wǒ xiǎng mǎi bǐ) and accidentally said something about a horse and mother's death.

She tested 5 apps specifically for tones. Here's what worked.

The test subjects:

1. Pleco (Free + paid add-ons)
The gold standard Chinese dictionary. Has a built-in tone practice tool.

What it does:
• Shows Pinyin with tone marks
• Plays native audio for every word
• Records your voice and compares it to the native speaker

Verdict: Excellent for reference. The recording comparison is helpful but basic. It tells you if you're wrong, not WHY.
Price: Free. Tone practice add-on: $4.99

2. HelloChinese (Free / Premium $11.99/month)
Gamified Chinese learning. Heavy focus on pronunciation.

What it does:
• AI speech recognition for tones
• Gives instant feedback: "Your 3rd tone is too high"
• Sentence-level practice, not just single words

Verdict: The best all-rounder. The AI feedback is surprisingly accurate. The gamification keeps you motivated.
Price: Free version is solid. Premium unlocks advanced content.

3. Chinese Pinyin App (Free / $2.99 full)
Dedicated Pinyin and tone practice. Native video demonstrations.

What it does:
• Video of a native speaker's mouth for every sound
• Visual tone curves — see the pitch rise and fall
• AI translation and explanations

Verdict: Best for visual learners. Seeing the mouth shape AND the pitch curve together clicked something for her.
Price: Free for basics. $2.99 for full phrasebook.

4. Maorma (Free website)
A free web-based tone drilling tool. Not an app, but works on mobile.

What it does:
• Rapid-fire tone recognition exercises
• Words, sentences, and minimal pairs (shi vs shi vs shi vs shi)

Verdict: Brutally effective. No gamification. Just drill until you can't get it wrong. She used it 10 minutes a day and saw improvement in 2 weeks.
Price: Completely free

5. Pingo AI (Free trial / Subscription)
AI conversation partner. Adapts to your level.

What it does:
• Simulates real conversations
• Corrects your tone mistakes in real-time
• Explains why you were wrong

Verdict: Great for confidence building. The real-time correction during conversation is unique. But it's expensive for what it is.
Price: Free trial. Subscription required for full access.

The winner:

HelloChinese for daily learning + Maorma for tone drilling.

HelloChinese teaches you the rules and gives you feedback. Maorma drills it until it's automatic.

She spent 15 minutes on HelloChinese every morning. 10 minutes on Maorma every evening.

After 3 weeks, her Chinese tutor said: "Your tones improved more in 3 weeks than in the previous 6 months."

The one trick that actually helped:

Minimal pairs.

Pairs of words that differ ONLY in tone:
• 妈 (mā) mother vs 马 (mǎ) horse
• 十 (shí) ten vs 是 (shì) is
• 买 (mǎi) buy vs 卖 (mài) sell

Practicing these in rapid succession trains your ear AND your mouth. Maorma does this perfectly.

What doesn't work:

• Duolingo: Great for gamification. Terrible for tones.
• Anki: Great for vocabulary. Tone practice is an afterthought.
• Just listening to podcasts: Passive listening doesn't fix active speaking.

My friend's advice:
"I spent months thinking tones would 'click' eventually. They don't. You have to drill them like a musical instrument. Find an app that tells you exactly what you're doing wrong, then practice until you can't get it wrong."
