My friend from Japan went shopping crazy in Shanghai. Silk scarves. Tea. A Huawei phone. A drone.
Total spent: ¥12,000.
At Pudong Airport, she expected the usual tax refund nightmare: forms, queues, waiting.
Instead, she walked into an "Instant Tax Refund" lane.
The process:
Step 1: Show passport, boarding pass, and purchased items to customs
Step 2: Customs scans a QR code on her phone (from the store's instant refund app)
Step 3: Confirms the goods are leaving the country
Step 4: Done
Total time: 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
She had already received the ¥1,100 refund INSTANTLY at each store when she bought the items. Customs just verified she was taking the goods out.
The old way vs new way:
Old way (pre-April 2025):
• Buy items
• Keep receipts
• Fill forms at airport
• Wait in line at refund counter
• Get refund in cash (after currency conversion losses) or credit card (weeks later)
• Minimum spend: ¥500 per store
New way (April 2025 onwards):
• Buy items, show passport
• Get instant refund via Alipay/WeChat/bank card at checkout
• At airport: customs verifies goods in 2 minutes
• Minimum spend: ¥200 per store
• Maximum instant refund: ¥20,000 cash equivalent
Her shopping breakdown:
| Item | Price | Refund | Net Cost | | Silk scarf (Hangzhou) | ¥800 | ¥88 | ¥712 | | Longjing tea | ¥350 | ¥39 | ¥311 | | Huawei phone | ¥5,500 | ¥605 | ¥4,895 | | DJI Mini drone | ¥3,200 | ¥352 | ¥2,848 | | Pearl earrings | ¥1,200 | ¥132 | ¥1,068 | | Total | ¥12,050 | ¥1,216 | ¥10,834 |
Where instant refund works at airports:
Shanghai Pudong: Dedicated instant refund lanes. Alipay-enabled.
Beijing Capital: 3 central refund points. Alipay-enabled.
Guangzhou Baiyun: "One order, one package" system.
Hangzhou Xiaoshan: "One-click refund" pilot. 2-minute process.
Important rules:
• You must leave China within 90 days of purchase
• Items must be unused and in original packaging when customs checks
• You must show the actual items at customs
• Food, alcohol, tobacco, and cars are NOT eligible
• Refund rates: 11% for most items, 8% for some categories
Pro tips:
• Ask every store: "可以退税吗?" (Can I get tax refund?)
• If a store says no, check if they're in the tax refund network (not all stores are)
• Download your tax refund QR codes before going to the airport
• If you didn't get instant refund at the store, you can still get it at the airport refund counter
• Keep receipts AND the goods easily accessible in your carry-on
My friend's reaction:"I budgeted ¥12,000 for souvenirs. I actually spent ¥10,834 because of the refund. The instant refund lane at Pudong was faster than security. Japan's tax refund system is good. China's new system is ridiculous. In a good way."
Anyone else shopped with the instant tax refund in China? How much did you get back? |
