Yeah, this one still hurts.

I landed at Beijing Capital after a 13-hour flight, exhausted, jet-lagged, and way too trusting. A guy in a white shirt approached me in the arrivals hall and said "Taxi?" I nodded. He took my bag, walked me to a black sedan outside, and quoted me ¥400 to get to my hotel.

I paid.

Later I found out the actual taxi would have been ¥120. And the metro? ¥30.

How to Spot the Scammers (So You Don't Be Me)

Real Beijing taxis are yellow/blue with a taxi sign on top. The scammers wear white shirts and approach you INSIDE the terminal. Real taxi drivers wait in a LINE outside.

If they quote a flat price, it's probably a scam. Real taxis use the meter. Period.

Didi is your friend. I use it for everything now. You see the price before you confirm, the driver can't change it, and you don't need to speak Chinese.

The ACTUAL Best Ways to Leave the Airport

Metro: ¥25–35 to city center. Takes 30–45 min. English signs. Seriously, this is the move.

Airport Express Bus: ¥30 to major districts. Comfy seats, English announcements.

Didi: ¥100–150 to most hotels. Use the app, don't accept random offers.

Real Taxi: Follow the "Taxi" signs to the official queue. Meter starts at ¥13. Never more than ¥200 to city center.

Silver Lining?
The scammer DID get me to my hotel. And honestly? After that flight, I might have paid ¥400 just to not have to think anymore. But still — don't be me.

Also, my hotel receptionist laughed when I told her the story and said "Ah, you took the black taxi. Everyone does it once." So at least I'm not alone?

Anyone else get taken for a ride (literally) on their first day? Let's commiserate.
