My friend from Brazil went to Xi'an. She booked her Terracotta Warriors tickets online 3 days in advance. She thought that meant skipping the queue.
She was wrong.
The queue:
She arrived at 10 AM. The entrance had three lines:
Line 1: Ticket purchase
For people without tickets. 200+ people.
Line 2: Ticket collection
For people who bought online but need physical tickets. 100+ people.
Line 3: Direct entry
For people with QR codes on their phone. 20 people.
She was in Line 2. Because she booked on a third-party site that required ticket collection.
The shortcut:
Book directly through the official WeChat mini-program or the official website. You get a QR code. You walk straight to the gate. No ticket collection. No queue.
Search: 秦始皇帝陵博物院 (Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum)
The official booking process:
1. Open WeChat → Mini Programs → Search 秦始皇帝陵博物院
2. Select date and time slot
3. Enter passport number
4. Pay via WeChat/Alipay
5. Get QR code
6. Show QR code + passport at entrance
Price: ¥120 (about $17) Time slots: Morning (8:30-12:00) or afternoon (12:00-17:00) Must book: At least 1 day in advance during peak season
Tips:
1. Go early.
Arrive at 8:30 AM when gates open. By 10 AM, it's packed. By noon, you can't see the warriors over the heads.
2. Hire a guide inside.
Official guides are available at the entrance. ¥200-300 for a group. Worth it — the signs are minimal and the history is fascinating.
3. Pit 1 is the big one.
The famous photo of thousands of warriors. Go there first before the crowds.
4. Don't miss the museum.
Next to the pits, the museum has the bronze chariots and detailed exhibits. Most tour groups skip it.
5. Getting there:
• Bus 306 from Xi'an Railway Station (¥7, 1 hour)
• Taxi/Didi from city center (¥100-120, 45 minutes)
• Tourist bus from Bell Tower (¥10, includes guide)
6. Avoid:
• Fake "Terracotta Warriors" museums near the real one. They're scams.
• Tour guides outside the official area. Some are unlicensed.
My Brazilian friend's lesson:
"I queued 45 minutes because I booked on the wrong website. The person next to me in the QR-code line walked straight in. I learned: in China, always use the official channel. Third-party convenience is an illusion."
Anyone else visited the Terracotta Warriors? What was your experience?
