I was sitting at a corner dumpling shop on Wulumuqi Road last Tuesday when Jake, an American freelancer who just landed in Shanghai, pulled out his phone to pay.
"I don't have Alipay set up yet," he said, reaching for his wallet.
"Try your PayPal," I told him, half-joking.
He looked at me like I was insane. But I wasn't kidding.
What changed in 2026:
In the lead-up to the APEC 2026 meetings in Shenzhen, Tencent announced three major initiatives to make inbound payments easier:
PayPal + WeChat Pay integration — TenPay Global partnered with PayPal World. Starting mid-2026, U.S.-based PayPal users can scan WeChat Pay QR codes at merchants across China without needing a Chinese wallet or bank account.
Fee waivers — New promotions for first-time international card users, including potential fee-free transactions under certain daily limits for the first 60 days.
16-language payment guidance — WeChat Pay added support for 16 languages in its payment interface.
Jake actually tried it. The shop's QR code worked. His PayPal deducted USD. The dumpling auntie got her RMB. Everyone was confused but happy.

One critical thing unchanged: You still cannot send P2P transfers or red packets with foreign cards. Jake tried to send me money for the dumplings and hit a wall. I had to pay cash and he paid me back later via Wise.
Passport verification update: Automated passport verification is now about 98% automated and completes in under 10 minutes. Jake's took 4 minutes.
The VPN rule still applies. Jake had his VPN on during setup and his card binding failed three times before he remembered to turn it off. Classic.
If you're American and visiting China in late 2026, PayPal + WeChat Pay might be the fastest way to start paying on day one.

Anyone tested the PayPal-WeChat integration yet? Curious if it works for non-U.S. PayPal accounts too.
