Let me set the scene: It's a Tuesday morning in Beijing. I'm at ICBC's main branch near Chaoyangmen because someone online said "main branches are better for foreigners."
I arrived at 9:05 AM. I left at 12:20 PM.
Three hours and fifteen minutes to open a basic savings account.
Why It Took So Long
Problem 1: The "English-speaking" staff member was at lunch. I got there at 9:05. She went on break at 11:30. I was told to wait for her. She came back at 12:00.
Problem 2: My address proof was "insufficient." I brought my rental contract. They wanted a utility bill in my name. I don't have a utility bill because utilities are included in my rent. Cue 20 minutes of confused discussion and a manager being called.
Problem 3: The system crashed. Twice. During the account creation process, the bank's internal system just... stopped working. Everyone in the branch sighed collectively. This apparently happens sometimes.
Problem 4: They needed to verify my visa type with a supervisor. My residence permit was fine, but the junior staff member wasn't authorized to process it. So I waited another 15 minutes for the supervisor to come over, glance at my passport, and nod.
Was It Worth It? Honestly... Yes.
Because once that account was open, everything else became easier:
• I could link it to Alipay and WeChat Pay — no more foreign card transaction limits
• I could receive my salary directly in RMB
• I could send money domestically via mobile banking instantly
• I got a UnionPay debit card that works everywhere in China (and increasingly, abroad)
Total cost: ¥0 (no account opening fee) Total time: 3 hours 15 minutes Total frustration: High at the time, forgotten within a week
Tips to Make It Faster
• Call ahead and ask which branches have English-speaking staff — then confirm they'll be there when you arrive
• Bring EVERYTHING: passport, residence permit, rental contract, employment letter, tax documents, phone with Chinese number activated
• Go on a weekday morning right when they open — 9:00 AM sharp
• Download the bank's app BEFORE you go — they'll ask you to set it up in the branch
• Be patient. Seriously. Getting frustrated won't speed anything up.
Alternative: Just Use Your Foreign Card?
For short-term visitors (under a month), honestly, you don't need a Chinese bank account. Link your foreign Visa/Mastercard to Alipay/WeChat Pay and you're good.
But if you're staying longer? The bank account is worth the one-day headache.
Anyone else survived the Chinese bank account opening process? Which bank did you use, and how long did it take?
