Stay2CN Guide | First 72 Hours — Airport Survival | Updated May 2026

Your first two hours on the ground set the tone for your entire China trip. Here's how to navigate arrival like a pro.

Step 1: Immigration & Visa-Free Transit
• Look for the "240-Hour Visa-Free Transit" counter (or 24/144-hour if applicable)
• Have your passport, onward ticket, and arrival card ready
• Since Nov 20, 2025, you can fill the arrival card online via the NIA app/WeChat/Alipay
• Typical processing time: 5–15 minutes

Step 2: SIM Card or eSIM
Airport SIM Counters:
• Available at all major airports (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, etc.)
• China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom kiosks
• Bring your passport — required for registration
• Prepaid plans: ¥100–200 for 10–30 GB valid 30 days
• Airport prices are slightly higher than city stores, but convenient

eSIM Options:
• Nomad: ~$12 for 10GB — widely considered best for China
• Airalo (Moshi Mosh): ~$15 for 10GB — reliable but routes through Hong Kong
• Holafly: Unlimited data plans — good for heavy users
• Activate BEFORE you land or on airport WiFi

Step 3: Airport WiFi
• Free WiFi is available at all major airports
• Usually requires passport verification or SMS code
• Use it to download apps, set up Alipay/WeChat Pay, and message family

Step 4: ATM & Cash
• ATMs accepting international cards (Visa/Mastercard) are plentiful
• Best banks: Bank of China, ICBC, China Construction Bank
• Withdraw ¥1,000–2,000 as backup cash
• Notify your home bank before traveling to avoid card blocks

Step 5: Getting to Your Hotel
Metro/Subway: Cheapest option. Most airports connect directly to city center.
Airport Express Bus: ¥20–35, comfortable, English announcements.
Taxi/Didi: Most convenient. ¥100–200 to city center.
High-Speed Rail: Shanghai Pudong & Beijing Daxing have direct HSR stations.

Essential Apps to Download at the Airport
1. Alipay — Payment + transit + everything
2. WeChat — Messaging + backup payment
3. Didi — Ride-hailing (English version available)
4. AMap (Gaode Maps) — Best navigation app for China
5. Trip.com — Hotels, trains, flights in English
6. Google Translate — Download offline Chinese pack
