Stay2CN Community Update | Visa Application Guides | May 2026
The COVA (China Online Visa Application) system launched in late 2025, and it's supposed to make the whole process smoother. I recently went through it for a business visa, so here's the honest review.
What COVA Actually Is
It's the new unified online platform that replaces the old paper forms for most Chinese visa types. You fill everything out online, upload documents, and then just show up at the embassy/consulate for biometrics and submission.
The Process Step by Step
Step 1: Create an account at the COVA portal Step 2: Fill out the application form online (takes about 20–30 minutes) Step 3: Upload your photo, passport scan, invitation letter, etc. Step 4: Book an appointment at your nearest visa center Step 5: Show up with your passport, print the confirmation, get biometrics done Step 6: Pick up or wait for delivery
What Worked Well
• The form saves your progress. Old paper forms didn't — if you made a mistake, you started over. COVA lets you come back later.
• Photo upload has auto-check. It tells you if your photo meets requirements BEFORE you go to the appointment. Huge time saver.
• Appointment booking is transparent. You see real availability instead of calling and getting vague answers.
What Still Sucks
• The website is... slow. Especially during peak travel seasons (spring/summer). Be patient.
• Some visa types still need physical documents that you can't upload — like original invitation letters. Check the requirements carefully.
• Not all countries have transitioned yet. If your local embassy still uses the old system, COVA won't be an option.
Photo Requirements Changed Slightly
COVA is stricter about photos than the old system. Make sure:
• White background (not off-white, not cream — WHITE)
• No shadows on your face
• Both ears visible
• Neutral expression (slight smile is usually okay, but don't risk it)
• No glasses if possible (some centers reject photos with glasses now)
My Timeline
• Application submitted online: Monday
• Appointment attended: Wednesday
• Visa ready for pickup: Following Monday
Total: 8 calendar days for a multiple-entry business visa. Pretty reasonable.
Has anyone else used COVA? What was your experience like? Any tips I missed?
