Stay2CN Community Update | Policy Updates | May 2026

China's visa policy has changed more in the last 18 months than in the previous decade. 240-hour transit, 50-country unilateral exemption, the new COVA system — it's been a whirlwind.

So what's next? Here are my predictions based on current trends and official statements, plus a few things I genuinely hope happen.

Prediction 1: The Unilateral Exemption Will Be Extended Again

The current 30-day visa-free policy for 50 countries is officially set to expire December 31, 2026. But here's the thing — it's already been extended three times. Each time, tourism numbers went up, and there were no major security issues.

My bet? It gets extended through at least mid-2027, possibly made permanent. The economic argument is too strong to ignore.

Prediction 2: More Countries Added to the List

Canada and the UK were added in February 2026. The trend has been to gradually expand the list to include more developed nations. I'd watch for:
• Additional European countries not yet covered
• Potential additions from Latin America (if diplomatic relations continue warming)
• Possible expansion to some Southeast Asian nations on a reciprocal basis

Prediction 3: Digital Nomad Visa on the Horizon?

This one's more speculative, but several Asian countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia) have launched digital nomad visas, and China's been watching. A dedicated remote work visa would attract long-stay, high-spending foreigners without the complexity of a full work permit.

I'm not saying it's happening in 2026, but I wouldn't be shocked if pilot programs are announced by 2027.

Prediction 4: E-Visas for More Nationalities

The COVA system is clearly laying groundwork for broader e-visa adoption. Right now it's mostly for streamlining in-person applications, but the infrastructure exists to go fully digital for certain visa types.

What I Hope Happens (But Might Not)

• Multi-year tourist visas becoming standard for repeat visitors
• Simplified business visa rules for entrepreneurs and freelancers
• Integration with international travel passes (like APEC card benefits expanding)

The Bottom Line

The direction is clear: China is actively making it easier for foreigners to visit. The question isn't IF policies will continue liberalizing — it's HOW FAST.

If you're on the fence about a China trip, my advice is: book it while the current generous policies are in place. Even if they change, you'll likely get grandfathered in if you already have plans.

What visa policy change would YOU most like to see? Digital nomad visa? Longer stays? Something else?
