Everyone talks about Beijing's history and Shanghai's glamour, but Shenzhen? Shenzhen is where you go to see what the future looks like.

I spent a weekend there recently and honestly, it feels like walking through a sci-fi movie. Here's how to experience the best of it in 48 hours.

Day 1: The Tech & Innovation Side

Morning: Start at Shenzhen Bay Park — a gorgeous waterfront park with views of Hong Kong across the water. Perfect for a morning run or stroll.

Afternoon: Hit Huaqiangbei, the world's electronics market. You can buy anything here — phone parts, drones, LED strips, random chips you've never heard of. Even if you're not buying, just walking through the multi-story markets is an experience.

Evening: Dinner in Nanshan — this is where all the tech workers live, and the restaurant scene reflects it: trendy, international, and surprisingly affordable.

Day 2: Nature & Culture

Morning: Take the metro to Window of the World or Splendid China — yes, they're touristy, but they're also weirdly charming miniature parks where you can see the Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall in the same hour.

Afternoon: Dafen Oil Painting Village — an entire neighborhood where artists reproduce famous paintings (and do custom portraits) for shockingly low prices. You can commission a portrait from a photo for ¥200–500.

Evening: Coco Park in Futian — Shenzhen's best nightlife and bar district. Very international crowd.

What Makes Shenzhen Different

• Average age: 32. This is the youngest major city in China. The energy is completely different from Beijing or Shanghai.
• Cashless to an extreme. I didn't see a single cash transaction in 48 hours. Even street vendors use QR codes.
• English is surprisingly common. More so than in most mainland cities, thanks to the international tech companies.
• Everything is new. Shenzhen went from fishing village to megacity in 40 years. Nothing is old. That's either exciting or sterile, depending on your taste.

Getting There & Around

• From Hong Kong: Metro directly from Kowloon (about 45 mins). No visa needed if you're just transiting.
• From Guangzhou: High-speed rail — 30 minutes, ¥80.
• Metro: Shenzhen's metro is excellent, modern, and accepts foreign cards directly at the gates now.

Has anyone else been to Shenzhen recently? Did it feel as futuristic to you as it did to me?
