Stay2CN Community Update | Events & Meetups | May 2026
China's event scene has exploded post-reopening, and 2026 is packed with festivals, concerts, and cultural events. Here's what's actually worth planning your trip around.
Spring (March–May)
Strawberry Music Festival: China's biggest outdoor music festival hits multiple cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu). Indie rock, electronic, hip-hop. Tickets sell out in minutes.
Qingming Festival: Tomb Sweeping Day (usually early April). Not a "fun" festival, but fascinating to observe — families visit ancestral graves, burn paper offerings, and picnic in parks.
West Lake Longjing Tea Harvest: Hangzhou. Late March to early April. You can visit tea fields, watch the picking process, and taste the first flush of the year.
Summer (June–August)
Dragon Boat Festival: June. Races on rivers and lakes across the country. Guangzhou and Hangzhou have the most spectacular events. Eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings).
Shanghai Pride Events: June. While official Pride marches aren't permitted, the LGBTQ+ community hosts parties, art shows, and networking events throughout the month.
Qingdao Beer Festival: August. China's Oktoberfest. Massive tents, cheap beer, questionable singing, and surprisingly good seafood.
Autumn (September–November)
Mid-Autumn Festival: September/October. Mooncakes, lantern displays, and family gatherings. The lantern festivals in Suzhou and Nanjing are especially beautiful.
National Day Golden Week: October 1–7. AVOID TRAVELING during this week. Everything is crowded and expensive. But the fireworks in Beijing and Shanghai are impressive if you're already there.
Shanghai Art Week: November. Galleries, installations, and exhibitions across the city. West Bund Art & Design Fair is the highlight.
Winter (December–February)
Harbin Ice Festival: January–February. Massive ice sculptures, snow activities, and temperatures that will make you question your life choices (-30°C). It's magical and miserable in equal measure.
Chinese New Year: January/February (dates vary). THE big one. Fireworks, red envelopes, temple fairs, family reunions. Best experienced in a smaller city — Beijing and Shanghai empty out as locals go home.
Year-Round Events
• Canton Fair: Guangzhou. April & October. Massive trade show — fascinating even if you're not in business
• Formula 1 Shanghai: April. The Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit
• NBA China Games: Usually October. Preseason games in Shanghai/Shenzhen
What's the best festival or event you've experienced in China? Any hidden gems I missed?
