China has multiple visa categories, and picking the wrong one can mean rejection or entry denial. Here's the clearest breakdown of each type and who should apply for what.

M Visa — Business

Documents: Passport, photo, invitation letter from Chinese company, business registration
Note: Does NOT allow you to work or be employed in China

Z Visa — Work
For: Taking up employment in China
Process: Employer applies for Work Permit Notification → You apply for Z visa at embassy → Enter China → Convert to Residence Permit within 30 days
Documents: Passport, photo, Work Permit Notification, employment contract, medical check
Duration: Initial 30-day single entry, then converted to 1-year Residence Permit

X Visa — Student
For: Full-time study at a Chinese university
Types: X1 (study >180 days) and X2 (study ≤180 days)
Documents: Passport, photo, JW201 or JW202 form (from university), admission letter
Note: X1 holders must convert to Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival

F Visa — Exchange/Visit
For: Non-commercial exchanges, academic visits, cultural activities, short-term study
Duration: Up to 180 days
Note: Being phased out in favor of M and X visas; check with your embassy

Q Visa — Family Reunion
For: Family members of Chinese citizens or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence
Types: Q1 (long-term, >180 days) and Q2 (short-term, ≤180 days)

S Visa — Private Affairs

Types: S1 (long-term) and S2 (short-term)

R Visa — Talent

Attending meetings/fairs? → M visa
Getting a job? → Z visa
Studying full-time? → X visa
