Stay2CN Official Guide | Getting Around | May 2026
China's urban transport is comprehensive, cheap, and mostly foreigner-friendly once you know the system. This guide covers every mode you'll use.
Metro (地铁)
Coverage: 50+ cities have metro systems. Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou have extensive networks.
Payment:
• Alipay/WeChat Pay transport QR code (easiest)
• Foreign contactless cards (Apple Pay, Visa/Mastercard tap-to-pay) at major city gates
• Single-trip tickets from machines (cash or mobile pay)
• Transit cards (not recommended for short visits)
Cost: ¥2–10 per ride depending on distance
Tips:
• Download the city's metro app for real-time maps (MetroMan works for most cities in English)
• Rush hours are 7:30–9:30 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM — avoid if possible
• Some lines are insanely crowded (Beijing Line 1, Shanghai Line 2)
Bus (公交车)
Payment: Alipay/WeChat transport QR code, or exact cash (no change given)
Cost: ¥1–3 per ride
Tips:
• Baidu Maps shows real-time bus locations and arrival times
• Bus stops are in Chinese — learn to recognize your destination characters
• Less crowded than metro during rush hour, but traffic is unpredictable
Shared Bikes (共享单车)
Providers: Meituan (yellow), Hello Bike (blue), DiDi Bike (green)
How to use:
1. Open Alipay or WeChat → scan QR code on bike
2. The lock opens automatically
3. Ride to destination
4. Manually close the lock — payment deducts automatically
Cost: ¥1.5–2 for 15 minutes; monthly passes available for ¥15–20
Tips:
• Check the bike condition before unlocking (brakes, seat height, tire pressure)
• Park in designated areas (marked on the app map) or face fines
• Shared e-bikes are also available in many cities — faster and less effort
Taxi & Rideshare
Didi (滴滴):
• China's Uber equivalent
• Download the Didi Global app for English interface
• Payment: Linked card or cash
• Options: Express (cheap), Premier (nicer cars), Luxe (luxury)
Traditional taxis:
• Flag down or use taxi stands
• Must use the meter (by law)
• Green light = available
• Have your destination written in Chinese
• Book via Trip.com (English) or 12306 (Chinese)
• Second class: ¥0.4–0.6 per km
• First class: ~1.6x second class price
• Business class: ~3x second class price
• Arrive 30 mins early for security
