Stay2CN Official Guide | Banking & Finance | May 2026
Requirements vary by bank and even by branch. This guide breaks down exactly what each major bank asks for.
Universal Requirements (All Banks)
• Original passport (not a copy)
• Valid Chinese visa or residence permit
• Chinese phone number (must receive SMS)
• Proof of address in China (rental contract or hotel registration)
Bank of China (中国银行) Additional docs: Employment letter or student certificate (sometimes) Best for: International transfers, wire receipts English support: Good at main branches in major cities Foreigner experience: Most consistent across branches Card delivery: Instant debit card at most branches
ICBC (中国工商银行) Additional docs: Often none beyond universal requirements Best for: Largest ATM network, government-related payments English support: Varies wildly by branch Foreigner experience: Hit or miss — main branches are fine, sub-branches may refuse Tip: Go to a "main branch" (支行), not a "sub-branch" (分理处)
China Merchants Bank (招商银行) Additional docs: Usually just the basics Best for: Modern app, good UI English support: Better app experience; branch staff varies Foreigner experience: Generally welcoming Note: Fewer rural branches than BOC or ICBC
HSBC China / Standard Chartered Additional docs: Proof of income, employment contract, sometimes minimum deposit (¥100,000+) Best for: Premium service, international connectivity English support: Excellent Foreigner experience: Smooth but expensive and selective
