Moving to China isn't just a trip — it's a transition. Here's a realistic roadmap of what to focus on each year.
Year 1: Survival
Focus: Basic functioning and emotional stability
To-do:
• Get your residence permit sorted immediately
• Find an apartment in a foreigner-friendly neighborhood
• Set up bank account, mobile payment, and internet
• Identify 3 "safe" restaurants where you can order confidently
• Find one social activity (running club, language exchange, gym)
• Learn 50 Mandarin words
• Visit a doctor once to understand the system
• Accept that you will have bad days — it's normal
Year 2: Belonging
Focus: Building relationships and local knowledge
To-do:
• Move to a more "local" neighborhood if you want deeper immersion
• Develop a group of friends (expat AND local)
• Travel to 3+ provinces within China
• Handle a bureaucratic challenge alone (visa renewal, tax filing)
• Eat at a restaurant with no English menu and no pictures
• Understand one Chinese TV show or comedy routine
• Start thinking about career development or side projects
Year 3: Mastery
Focus: Contributing and deciding your future
To-do:
• Mentor a newcomer — share what you learned
• Navigate a complex situation entirely in Mandarin
• Build professional reputation (if working)
• Explore business or investment opportunities
• Decide: stay long-term, or plan your exit?
• If staying: consider property purchase (restrictions apply to foreigners)
• If leaving: start documenting/selling your China life
Year 4+: Integration or Transition
If staying:
• Permanent residence application (eligible after 4+ years of continuous work)
• Deepen community ties
• Potentially start a family (understand maternity/paternity laws)
• Consider Chinese citizenship (rare, but possible)
If leaving:
• Prepare for reverse culture shock
• Maintain China connections (they become valuable)
• Decide what to do with your apartment, bank accounts, and relationships
The In-Between Years
Not everyone follows this timeline. Some people integrate in 6 months. Others never do. Both are valid. The key is being intentional about what you want from your time here.
