China has three payment systems running in parallel. Here's when to use each.
Mobile Pay (Alipay/WeChat)
Best for: 95% of daily life
Works at: Restaurants, metro, taxis, supermarkets, street vendors
Need: Phone + verified account
Limit: ¥5,000 per transaction (foreign cards)
Foreign Card (Visa/Mastercard)
Best for: Hotels, international chains, large purchases
Works at: Major hotels, high-end restaurants, some metro gates
Limit: Acceptance is spotty outside Tier-1 cities
Cash (RMB)
Best for: Backup, small vendors, rural areas
Works at: Everywhere legally, though some young vendors genuinely don't know how to handle it
Tip: Carry ¥500–1,000 in small bills
The Golden Rule:
Set up mobile pay first, carry cash as backup, use foreign card only at hotels and malls.
