Late arrivals and early departures happen. Here's how to survive a night at or near a Chinese airport without losing your mind.
If You Have 6–12 Hours:
Stay at the airport. Most major airports have rest zones.
Beijing Capital (PEK):
• Hourly hotels in T2 and T3 (¥200–400 for 4 hours)
• Free rest chairs in international departure areas
Shanghai Pudong (PVG):
• In-terminal hotel: ¥800–1,200/night but walk to check-in in 5 mins
• Nearby budget hotels with free shuttle: ¥300–500
Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN):
• 24-hour McDonald's and Starbucks in T2
• Nearby hotels: ¥250–400, shuttles every 30 mins
If You Have 12+ Hours:
Just go to the city. Even at midnight, metro/airport buses run.
Essentials for Airport Overnight:
• Eye mask and earplugs (announcements run all night)
• Portable charger (outlets are limited)
• Warm layer (airport AC is aggressive)
• Snacks (airport food closes late except chains)
Security Note:
Chinese airports are extremely safe. Sleeping in public areas is common and nobody bothers you.
