If you're staying in China more than a month, you need to think about insurance. Here's the breakdown.
Option 1: International Private Insurance
Providers: Cigna, Bupa, Allianz, AXA
Pros:
• Covers international hospitals (Parkway, United Family)
• Direct billing — no upfront payment
• English customer service
• Covers you if you travel outside China
Cons:
• Expensive (¥15,000–50,000/year)
• Doesn't cover public hospital TCM treatments
• Pre-existing conditions often excluded
Option 2: Chinese Commercial Insurance
Providers: Ping An, China Life, Taikang
Pros:
• Much cheaper (¥2,000–8,000/year)
• Covers public hospitals where you'll likely go
• Some include outpatient coverage
Cons:
• Chinese-language only
• Reimbursement model (pay first, claim later)
• Complex claims process
Option 3: Social Insurance (社保)
If employed legally, your company must enroll you. Covers public hospitals at Chinese citizen rates. Not enough alone for major issues.
My Setup:
Employer-provided Chinese insurance for routine stuff + Cigna top-up for emergencies and international hospitals.
Bottom line: Short-term (<3 months): travel insurance. Long-term: employer plan + international top-up if you can afford it.
